Lidia Thorpe

Profile

Lidia Thorpe is an Australian politician serving as a Senator for Victoria since 2020. As the first Aboriginal woman to represent the state in the Senate, she is a prominent advocate for the Indigenous sovereignty movement and a critic of Australian political institutions, which she views as legacies of colonialism. Formerly a member of the Australian Greens and a representative in the Victorian Legislative Assembly, she became an independent senator in 2023. Her political career has been marked by her vocal opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament and her focus on advancing clan-based treaties.
