Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, she immigrated to the United States as a child and was raised in Oakland, California. Before her election to the state legislature, she held prominent roles in the labor movement, including serving as the executive secretary-treasurer of the Alameda Labor Council, where she was the first Latina to hold the position. A member of the California Legislative Progressive Caucus, Ortega focuses on labor rights and public service advocacy.
