A member of the Democratic Party, Cavanaugh has focused her legislative efforts on paid family leave and LGBTQ+ rights. She gained national attention for her filibuster against legislation restricting transgender healthcare and for being the first senator to breastfeed on the Nebraska Capitol floor.
