Before her election to the Senate, she served as the 81st Governor of New Hampshire from 2013 to 2017 and was a member of the New Hampshire Senate from 2005 to 2010, where she served as majority leader. A member of the Democratic Party, Hassan has focused her career on issues such as healthcare, reproductive rights, and climate change. She is one of the few individuals in U.S. history to have served as both a state governor and a U.S. senator.
