In 2024, he was elected to serve as Speaker pro tempore of the House. A veteran of the U.S. Army who served in the Vietnam War, Barton previously worked as a systems analyst for Chevron and served for 12 years as a Jackson County Supervisor. Throughout his legislative career, he has focused on economic development, infrastructure funding, and education, and he notably voted in favor of changing the Mississippi state flag in 2020.
