Marcela Mitaynes

Marcela Mitaynes is a Peruvian-American politician and tenant organizer serving as a member of the New York State Assembly for the 51st district. Born in Peru and raised in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, she became politically active following her own experience with eviction in 2006. A member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Mitaynes has centered her legislative career on housing justice, tenant protections, and support for undocumented workers. She was first elected in 2020 after defeating a long-term incumbent and has since been a vocal advocate for statewide eviction moratoriums and social welfare funding.
