Mark Kelly is an American politician, retired astronaut, and former naval officer serving as the senior United States Senator from Arizona since 2020. Before entering politics, he had a distinguished career as a naval aviator, flying combat missions during the Gulf War, and later joined NASA, where he piloted or commanded four Space Shuttle missions. Following the 2011 assassination attempt on his wife, former Representative Gabby Giffords, he retired from service to support her recovery and became a prominent advocate for gun control legislation. He was elected to the Senate in a 2020 special election and reelected to a full term in 2022.
