Matt Smith is an Australian politician and former professional basketball player who currently serves as the Member of the House of Representatives for the Division of Leichhardt. Born in Sale, Victoria, and of Indigenous Australian heritage, Smith played seven seasons in the National Basketball League (NBL) between 1999 and 2009, representing teams such as the Wollongong Hawks, Victoria Giants, New Zealand Breakers, and Cairns Taipans. Following his athletic career, he entered politics and was elected to federal parliament in the 2025 federal election. He is affiliated with the Labor Left faction and has focused on regional infrastructure and social housing initiatives in far north Queensland.
