Before his election to the state legislature, he served as the Covington County Commission Chairman from 1995 to 2020. Outside of his political career, Hammett is a business owner who operates Hammett Drilling. He is a member of the Methodist church and is the second cousin of former Alabama House Speaker Seth Hammett.
