Matthias Moosdorf
Profile
Matthias Moosdorf is a German cellist and politician serving as a member of the Bundestag for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Born in Leipzig, he enjoyed a distinguished career as a classical musician, notably as a member of the Leipzig String Quartet from 1988 to 2019 and as a principal cellist with the Leipzig Chamber Orchestra. Transitioning into politics, he became involved with the AfD in 2016, where he has been associated with the party's right wing and has held roles as a research assistant and political advisor. Moosdorf has faced public controversy regarding his political statements, his advocacy against the Global Compact for Migration, and his 2024 appointment as an honorary professor at the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music. In December 2025, he was charged by Berlin prosecutors for an alleged incident involving a Hitler salute at the Reichstag, an accusation he has denied.
