Michal Šimečka is a Slovak politician, journalist, and researcher who currently serves as a Member of the National Council of Slovakia and as the leader of the opposition. A co-founder of the social-liberal Progressive Slovakia party, he previously served as a Member of the European Parliament and as a Vice-President of the European Parliament from 2022 to 2023. Educated at Charles University and the University of Oxford, Šimečka is a prominent advocate for the rule of law and LGBT rights in Europe.
