He currently chairs the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence. Before entering politics, he worked as a radio engineer and served as the director of the Smila Foundry in the Cherkasy region. A long-time associate of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Zavitnevych represents the Servant of the People party and has been active in parliamentary oversight regarding national security and defense policy.
