In 2025, she assumed the role of Speaker pro tempore of the Assembly. A veteran of the United States Army, Hunter began her political career in 2013 as an at-large member of the Syracuse Common Council, where she chaired the Public Safety Committee. She is known for her involvement with various Syracuse-based charitable organizations, including the Syracuse Community Health Center and Catholic Charities.
