Prior to her election to the Scottish Parliament, she served as the Member of Parliament for North Ayrshire and Arran from 2015 to 2024 and was a councillor for the Glasgow City Council between 2007 and 2012. A former teacher, she has been an active advocate for the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign and has held various spokesperson roles within the Scottish National Party.
