Paul Lane is a Canadian politician currently serving as the Speaker of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. Born and raised in St. John's, he previously worked as an occupational health and safety professional and disability claims manager before entering municipal politics as a city councillor and deputy mayor in Mount Pearl. First elected to the provincial legislature in 2011 as a Progressive Conservative, he later joined the Liberal Party before eventually sitting as an Independent. Throughout his tenure, he has been known for his independent voting record and his focus on provincial policy issues.
