Previously, he served as the Union Minister of State for Drinking Water and Sanitation from 2016 to 2019 and held several ministerial positions in the Karnataka state government during the 1980s and 1990s. Throughout his career, he has been associated with various political parties, including the Janata Dal and Lok Shakti, before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2002.
