A prominent figure in Brazilian politics, she previously served as the Governor of Maranhão from 1995 to 2002 and again from 2009 to 2014, becoming the first female governor in the country's history. She also served as a Senator from 2003 to 2009. As the daughter of former President José Sarney, she has been a central figure in the political landscape of Maranhão for decades.
