Sônia Guajajara is a Brazilian indigenous activist, environmentalist, and politician currently serving as a Member of the Chamber of Deputies. Born in the Araribóia Indigenous Land in Maranhão, she rose to prominence as a leader of the Articulation of the Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB). She made history in 2018 as the first indigenous person to run for a federal executive position in Brazil. A member of the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL), she has been a vocal advocate for indigenous land rights and environmental protection, frequently opposing policies that threaten the Amazon rainforest. In 2023, she was appointed to lead the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, further cementing her role as a key figure in Brazilian politics.
