Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Fisk University and a Master of Science in physics from the University of Memphis. Prior to his political career, McKenzie worked as a scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he managed maintenance on the Spallation Neutron Source. He is the brother of former NFL players Raleigh and Reggie McKenzie.
