Sarbananda Sonowal is an Indian politician currently serving as a Member of the Lok Sabha for the Dibrugarh constituency and as the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. A prominent leader from Assam, he previously served as the 14th Chief Minister of Assam from 2016 to 2021, marking the first time the Bharatiya Janata Party held the state's top office. Earlier in his career, he was a key figure in the All Assam Students Union and served as a member of the Rajya Sabha. Sonowal is noted for his legal efforts to challenge the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) Act, which was subsequently struck down by the Supreme Court of India.
