A prominent leader from Assam, he previously served as the 14th Chief Minister of Assam from 2016 to 2021, marking the first time the Bharatiya Janata Party held the state's top office. Earlier in his career, he was a key figure in the All Assam Students Union and served as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
