Before entering elected office, he worked as an assistant public defender in Philadelphia and clerked for Judge Dan McCaffery. Dougherty earned his law degree from Temple University Beasley School of Law in 2019. He entered politics in 2024, successfully challenging incumbent Kevin Boyle in the Democratic primary before winning the general election.
