Prior to his election to the House of Commons, he had a long career in local government, serving as a councillor for Torbay Council from 1995 and as its leader from 2019 to 2023. Darling, who is registered blind and works with his guide dog Jennie, currently serves as the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Work and Pensions. He is active on several parliamentary committees, including the Department for Work and Pensions Select Committee.
