Susan Collins is an American politician serving as the senior United States senator for Maine since 1997. A member of the Republican Party, she is the longest-serving member of Congress from Maine and the longest-serving Republican woman in the Senate. Known as a moderate and centrist Republican, she has frequently acted as a pivotal vote on major legislation and judicial confirmations. Before her Senate career, she held various roles in state and federal government, including commissioner of the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation and regional director for the Small Business Administration. She currently chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee.
