Toru Yamamoto is a Japanese politician currently serving as the Mayor of Sumida Ward in Tokyo. Born in Sumida, he graduated from Aoyama Gakuin University and initially worked in the insurance industry before serving as a secretary to his father, a Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly member. Yamamoto began his political career as a member of the Sumida Ward Assembly, serving two terms starting in 2007. He was first elected Mayor of Sumida in 2015 and has since secured re-election, currently serving his third term. During his tenure, he has implemented policies such as the Sumida Ward Partnership Oath System for same-sex couples and has maintained a consistent stance regarding the annual memorial ceremony for victims of the Great Kanto Earthquake.
