A member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), he has served as a member of the Landtag of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern since 1990 and has held various ministerial portfolios in the state government since 1998, currently serving as the Minister for Climate Protection, Agriculture, Rural Areas and Environment. Before entering politics, he worked as an agricultural engineer.
