Tom Tate

Tom Tate is an Australian businessman and politician who has served as the Mayor of the Gold Coast since 2012. Born in Vientiane, Laos, he moved to Australia as a child and later qualified as a civil engineer. Before entering politics, he had a successful career in the construction, tourism, and hospitality industries, notably managing the Islander Resort Hotel. First elected as an independent candidate, Tate has secured four consecutive terms, becoming the longest-serving mayor in the city's history. While his tenure has been marked by significant infrastructure development and electoral success, he has also faced scrutiny regarding council decision-making and official conduct, though he has consistently maintained his innocence and successfully navigated various investigations.
