A member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), he previously served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 2024 to 2026 and as the Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports Development. Before entering politics in 2019, he was a prominent film actor, producer, and distributor through his company, Red Giant Movies. Udhayanidhi is known for his advocacy of social justice and his outspoken stance against caste-based inequality, often citing the ideologies of Periyar and B.R. Ambedkar.
