Akiko Yaguchi is a Japanese politician currently serving as the Mayor of Sakata in Yamagata Prefecture. Born in Tokyo, she graduated from Keio University and later earned a degree from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. Before entering politics, she worked at the Hokkaido-Tohoku Development Finance Corporation and the Kanagawa Prefectural Government, and served as a professor at the Tohoku University of Community Service and Science. She previously served as the Deputy Mayor of Sakata from 2016 to 2022. In 2023, she was elected as the first female mayor in Yamagata Prefecture, running unopposed in the municipal election.
