Aleksandar Šapić

Aleksandar Šapić is a Serbian politician and former professional water polo player who currently serves as the Mayor of Belgrade. Before entering politics, he enjoyed a highly decorated athletic career, winning multiple Olympic, World, and European championship medals. He transitioned into public service by serving as the president of the New Belgrade municipality from 2012 to 2022. A member of the Serbian Progressive Party, Šapić has held the mayoral office since 2022, with a brief interruption in 2023, and was re-elected in 2024. His political tenure has been marked by a focus on urban development, public transportation, and social welfare projects, though he has also faced public scrutiny regarding his academic credentials and administrative decisions.
