A lifelong resident of Racine, Wisconsin, she spent years as a public school teacher and became a prominent labor advocate, serving as the president of Racine Educators United. Her political activism was galvanized by the 2011 Wisconsin Act 10, which prompted her to take a leading role in union affairs.
