Previously, she represented the Mid Scotland and Fife region as an MSP and served as the Member of Parliament for Perth in the UK House of Commons from 2001 to 2005. During her career, she held ministerial roles including Minister for Youth and Women's Employment and Minister for Community Safety and Legal Affairs. Known for her legal background, she has been an active voice on social and justice issues, occasionally breaking the party whip on matters such as gender recognition reform and criminal justice legislation.
