April Baskin is an American politician currently serving as a member of the New York State Senate for the 63rd district, representing parts of Buffalo. She made history as the first Black woman to represent Western New York in the State Senate. Prior to her election to the Senate in 2024, Baskin served on the Erie County Legislature, where she became the youngest person to hold the position of chairwoman in 2019. During her legislative career, she has focused on community benefits and public safety, notably sponsoring 'Desha's Law,' which mandates cardiac emergency response plans in public schools.
