Apsana Begum

Apsana Begum is a British politician who has served as the Member of Parliament for Poplar and Limehouse since 2019. A member of the left-wing Socialist Campaign Group, she is notable for being the first MP to wear a hijab in the UK Parliament. Before her election, she worked in administrative and diversity roles for Tower Hamlets Council and Queen Mary University of London. Her political career has focused on issues such as social justice, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on minority communities, and combating Islamophobia and domestic abuse. She holds a degree in politics from Queen Mary University of London and a postgraduate diploma from SOAS.
