Eri Arfiya is a Japanese politician currently serving as a member of the House of Representatives for Chiba's 5th district and as Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs. Born in Kitakyushu to Uyghur and Uzbek parents, she naturalized as a Japanese citizen in 1999. Before entering politics, she worked at the Bank of Japan and the United Nations, focusing on international finance and security. Arfiya is known for her advocacy on constitutional reform, including the formal recognition of the Self-Defense Forces, and supports policies such as selective separate surnames for married couples. In 2023, she was recognized by TIME magazine as one of the 'TIME100 Next' leaders.
