A member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), he has served in the state parliament since 2003. Thümler previously held the position of Minister for Science and Culture of Lower Saxony from 2017 to 2022 and served as the leader of the CDU parliamentary group and opposition leader from 2013 to 2017. He holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow and is actively involved in various cultural and scientific foundations.
