A farmer by trade, he is known for his conservative political stances and his role as Chairman of the Illinois Freedom Caucus. Miller has been a vocal advocate for separating Downstate Illinois from the Chicago region. In 2021, he faced a formal censure by the Illinois House for his attendance at the Save America rally that preceded the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. He is married to U.S. Representative Mary Miller.
