A member of the Republican Party, she previously served as the Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce from 2012 to 2018 and as a member of the Mississippi State Senate from 2000 to 2012. Originally a Democrat, she switched her party affiliation to Republican in 2010. Throughout her career, she has maintained a conservative voting record, focusing on issues such as Second Amendment rights, opposition to abortion, and agricultural policy. She is the first woman to represent Mississippi in the United States Congress.
