Born in Paarl in 1967, he began his career in the textile industry before entering politics as a ward councillor for the Independent Democrats in 2007. He later joined the Democratic Alliance and served as the Mayor of the Drakenstein Local Municipality from 2016 to 2024. Following his departure from the mayoral office, he briefly served as a member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament before his election to the National Assembly.
