Daichi Suzuki is a Japanese politician, sports scientist, and former competitive swimmer who currently serves as a member of the House of Councillors. He gained international fame as the gold medalist in the 100m backstroke at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where he pioneered the 'Vasalo' underwater swimming technique. Following his athletic career, he transitioned into academia and sports administration, serving as the first Commissioner of the Japan Sports Agency from 2015 to 2020. He has held various leadership roles, including President of the Japan Swimming Federation and board positions within international sports organizations. In 2025, he was elected to the House of Councillors representing the Tokyo constituency as a candidate for the Liberal Democratic Party.
