Previously, he served as the Mayor of Lewisham from 2018 to 2024, where he focused on housing, climate action, and community development. Before his mayoral tenure, he was a local councillor in Lewisham and a parish councillor in Bristol. Egan is a convert to Judaism and is active in promoting UK-Israel relations, currently serving as an honorary vice-chair of Labour Friends of Israel and co-chair of the APPG on UK-Israel.
