A member of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), he has held various spokesperson roles within the party, including for infrastructure, Brexit, the economy, and education. Before his election to the Assembly, he worked as a constituency representative and served on the SDLP's National Executive Committee. McCrossan holds a law degree from Liverpool John Moores University and has also served as the chairperson of the Northern Ireland Audit Committee.
