Matthew O'Toole is a Northern Irish politician and journalist serving as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly for Belfast South since 2020. A member of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), he has served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Northern Ireland Assembly since 2022. Before entering politics, O'Toole worked as a civil servant at HM Treasury and 10 Downing Street, where he focused on the EU referendum and its aftermath. As an MLA, he has been a prominent voice on Brexit, the Northern Ireland Protocol, and economic policy, while also chairing the SDLP's New Ireland Commission to explore the future of a united Ireland.
