As the first black woman elected to the UK Parliament, she holds the title of Mother of the House as the longest-serving female MP. Throughout her career, she has been a vocal campaigner on issues of race, inequality, and civil liberties. Following her departure from the Labour Party in 2025, she currently sits as an independent Member of Parliament.
