Previously, she had a distinguished career in the House of Commons, representing Epping Forest from 1997 to 2024. During her tenure in the Commons, she served as the first female Chairman of Ways and Means and held various shadow cabinet positions, including Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland. Known for her long-standing parliamentary service, she is a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
