First elected to the council in 1988, she served as deputy mayor from 2001 to 2008 before assuming her current role as mayor in 2008. Throughout her tenure, she has been a vocal advocate for diversity and multiculturalism, supporting initiatives such as the City of Salisbury's recognition of its founder's African heritage and the hosting of inclusive community events. In 2018, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her outstanding contributions to local government.
