Harold Pope Jr. is an American politician and retired United States Air Force officer currently serving as a member of the New Mexico Senate for the 23rd district. Elected in 2020, he made history as the first African-American member of the New Mexico Senate. Before entering politics, Pope had a distinguished military career as a chemist and acquisitions officer, specializing in satellite programs and nuclear deterrence. He later served as a facilities transition advisor for the City of Albuquerque. Pope holds a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of New Mexico, a Master of Science in pharmaceutical chemistry from the University of Florida, and a Master of Arts in operational leadership from the Air Command and Staff College.
