Hwang Jong-woo

Hwang Jong-woo is a South Korean bureaucrat and politician born in 1967. He graduated from Seoul National University with a bachelor's degree in law and a master's degree in public administration, and passed the 38th higher civil service examination in 1994. Throughout his career, he has served in various administrative roles within the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, as well as working in the Office of the President during the Roh Moo-hyun and Moon Jae-in administrations. He took office as the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries in March 2026 under the Lee Jae-myung government, where his policy focus includes developing South Korea's southeastern region into a global maritime hub and preparing for Arctic shipping routes.
