Born and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he previously served on the Lancaster City Council from 2017 to 2022 and worked as a program specialist for the Lancaster County Homeless Coalition. Smith-Wade-El holds a Bachelor of Arts in theatre and anthropology from Carnegie Mellon University. He is notable for being the first Black and first LGBTQ representative to serve his district.
