Born in apartheid-era South Africa, he moved to the United States at age 12. Prior to his tenure in the Senate, he served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 2009 to 2014. Throughout his legislative career, Lewis has been a key advocate for progressive policies, including raising the minimum age for tobacco purchases, increasing the state minimum wage to $15, and establishing a state-funded paid family and medical leave program. He has announced his retirement from the state Senate effective at the end of 2026.
