Since May 2023, he has served as the chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the state legislature, acting as the leader of the opposition. A member of the SPD since 1992, Ott previously held various local political roles in Cologne, including serving on the city council and as a party leader. Before his full-time political career, he worked as a teacher of history, social sciences, and religion. He has been designated as the lead candidate for the SPD in the 2027 North Rhine-Westphalia state election.
